What is Postpartum Hair Loss?

Welcoming a new life into the world is a joyous occasion, but for many new mothers, the postpartum period can bring unexpected changes to their bodies, including hair loss.

Postpartum hair loss, also known as telogen effluvium, is a common phenomenon that affects a significant number of women in the months following childbirth.

We Work with Your Insurance

Most of our clients who need a medical wig or hair prosthetic are covered by insurance.

Postpartum Hair Loss is Common

Postpartum hair loss typically occurs around three to six months after childbirth and is characterized by excessive shedding of hair.

During pregnancy, hormonal changes cause hair to remain in the growth phase for longer than usual, resulting in thicker, fuller hair. However, once hormone levels return to normal after childbirth, the hair growth cycle resets, leading to a shedding phase known as telogen effluvium.

This shedding is a natural part of the hair growth cycle and is usually temporary.

“The Wig Medical team of Cranial Prosthesis Specialists are dedicated to helping solve your hair loss challenges.”

Coping Strategies for Postpartum Hair Loss

Coping with postpartum hair loss can be challenging, but there are several strategies that new mothers can employ to manage this temporary condition:

Be Gentle with Your Hair

Avoid harsh treatments such as chemical straightening, excessive heat styling, or tight hairstyles that can further stress hair follicles.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and protein can support overall hair health and promote regrowth. Consider incorporating foods such as lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your diet.

Consider Shorter Hairstyles

Opting for shorter hairstyles or haircuts can help minimize the appearance of thinning hair and make styling more manageable during the postpartum period.

Seek Support

Talking to other new mothers who are experiencing similar challenges can provide valuable emotional support and reassurance.

Use Gentle Hair Care Products

Choose mild, sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners that are gentle on the scalp and hair. Avoid overwashing and opt for air-drying or using low-heat settings when styling hair.

Postpartum Hair Loss FAQs

Postpartum hair loss refers to the shedding of hair that many women experience after giving birth.

This condition is a form of telogen effluvium, a temporary hair loss phenomenon caused by changes in the hair growth cycle. During pregnancy, increased estrogen levels prolong the growing phase (anagen phase) of hair, leading to less shedding and often thicker, more vibrant hair.

After childbirth, as hormone levels normalize, a larger than usual number of hairs enter the resting phase (telogen phase) and then fall out.

Postpartum hair loss typically begins a few months after childbirth and can last anywhere from a few months to a year.

The timing and duration vary from person to person. For most women, their hair returns to its pre-pregnancy state within 6 to 12 months after giving birth.

The primary cause of postpartum hair loss is the significant hormonal changes that occur after childbirth.

During pregnancy, high levels of hormones like estrogen and progesterone promote hair growth and prevent normal shedding.

After delivery, as these hormone levels drop, the hair compensates by shedding the excess hair accumulated during pregnancy.

While it's not possible to completely prevent postpartum hair loss due to its hormonal basis, certain practices can help manage the extent of hair shedding and support hair health. These include:

Maintaining a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, especially iron, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Avoiding tight hairstyles that may stress the hair follicles.

Using a gentle shampoo and avoiding excessive heat styling.

Taking care of your overall health and managing stress through relaxation techniques or exercise.

Postpartum hair loss is typically temporary, and no specific treatment is required for most women as the hair cycle returns to normal on its own.
