Denise Stephens

Warren, Michigan

I'm Denise Stephens, a Certified Cranial Prosthesis Specialist and the owner of Stephens Cranial Prosthetic Solutions LLC in Warren, Michigan.

I've spent more than twenty years in the beauty and hair industry. Twenty years teaches you something that has nothing to do with technique: hair is tied to identity. People don't sit in your chair because of how hair looks. They sit there because of how it makes them feel about themselves.

Why I expanded into cranial prosthetics

Those two decades gave me a strong foundation in hair care, styling and customization, and let me work closely with people from a lot of different backgrounds.

Recently I added to that by becoming certified as a cranial prosthesis specialist through Wig Medical, so I could focus on personalized solutions for people experiencing medical and other significant forms of hair loss.

Stephens Cranial Prosthetic Solutions is where those two things come together — long industry experience on one side, specialized medical training on the other, offered as private, individualized consultations and fittings.

The part of this work I love

Honestly, it's helping someone rediscover their confidence at a moment that feels very personal and often very emotional.

Hair loss affects so much more than appearance, and being able to offer a private, compassionate space where someone feels heard matters to me.

I also love the creative side of it — choosing the right hair, color, density, texture and fit to create something natural-looking that reflects your individual style rather than a generic one.

But the moment that makes this work worth doing is when a client looks in the mirror and feels like herself again. That's it. That's the whole reason.

What I want your experience to be

I want you to feel confident, comfortable and like yourself again while you're navigating hair loss — in a private, personalized setting where you feel heard and supported.

Practically, that means educating you about your options rather than steering you, helping you find a cranial prosthesis that genuinely fits your lifestyle, and walking with you through the whole process: consultation, selection, fitting, styling and ongoing care.

Most importantly, I want you to leave feeling seen and empowered — not defined by your hair loss.

If you haven't seen one before, a medical-grade cranial prosthesis is built differently from a retail wig: a breathable base rather than lace, worn without glue, and made for a scalp that may be sensitive or healing.

About insurance

Part of what I was trained in is the documentation side, which is where most people get stuck.

Your doctor — usually a dermatologist or an oncologist — writes the prescription, and one word on it matters a great deal: it should say cranial prosthesis rather than wig. The first is a medical device; the second reads as a cosmetic purchase, and that distinction decides a lot of claims. Here's how insurance coverage for a cranial prosthesis works if you'd like to understand the process before we talk.

I won't tell you your claim is guaranteed, because nobody honestly can. Coverage depends on your plan, your state, your diagnosis, your documentation and your supplier status, and Original Medicare doesn't cover cranial prostheses at present. What I can tell you is that many denials come down to how something was documented rather than whether you were truly excluded.
