What happens during a cranial prosthesis consultation?
Your specialist listens to what is happening with your hair loss, assesses your scalp, takes head measurements, and works through cap construction, hair type, colour, texture, and density with you. You leave knowing your options, real pricing, and what your insurance situation looks like. Nothing is ordered until you decide.

Your specialist looks at scalp sensitivity, tenderness, healing, and remaining hair, because that determines which cap constructions are realistic for you.

Circumference, front to nape, ear to ear over the top, temple to temple, and nape width. These decide fit and comfort more than any other factor.

Colour, texture, and density
Matching your natural colour and texture, and choosing a density that reads as real. Overly dense units are the most common reason a prosthesis looks like a wig.

Human hair or synthetic, lace front or monofilament top, custom or ready-to-wear, weighed against your timeline, your scalp, and your budget.

How to prepare
None of these are required. Each one makes the appointment better.
- A photo of your hair before the lossThe single most useful thing you can bring. It makes colour, texture, and density matching far more accurate.
- Your prescription, if you have oneIf your physician has already written one, bring it. If not, Wig Medical will tell you what to ask for.
- Your treatment timelineWhen treatment starts, how long it runs, and when hair loss is expected. Timing changes which options are realistic.
- Your questions, written downPeople forget them in the room. Write them down beforehand, including the ones that feel too small to ask.

Consultation questions
Does the consultation cost anything?
It depends on the specialist. Some include the consultation, some charge a fee that is credited toward your prosthesis. Wig Medical tells you before you book so there is no surprise.
Do I have to order something at the consultation?
No. Plenty of people consult first, go home, think about it, and come back. That is normal and expected, especially when you are also managing treatment.
Can I consult before I have lost my hair?
Yes, and it is the best time to do it. Your specialist can match your natural colour, texture, and density directly instead of working from a photo, and you can be fitted before treatment begins.
What if my scalp is sore or healing?
Tell your specialist immediately. Scalp sensitivity changes which cap constructions are appropriate, and there are soft, breathable, low-tension options built specifically for tender or healing scalps. Nothing will be put on your head that hurts.
How long until I actually have it?
Ready-to-wear units can often be fitted and taken home quickly. Custom units are made to your measurements and take longer. If you are on a treatment deadline, say so at the consultation and your specialist will steer you toward what can arrive in time.
