Wig Medical certified

Katrina Bowles

Charlotte, North Carolina

I'm Katrina Bowles, a certified trichologist and the founder of Treatment Salon Inc. in Charlotte, North Carolina — a practice built around hair and scalp wellness.

I've spent thirty-one years in the beauty industry, and the past few of them in trichology. That shift changed how I work: I'm now as interested in what's happening on the scalp as I am in what sits on top of it.

Where my training comes from

My trichology certification is from the World Trichology Society, and I'm an active member of the American Hair Loss Council.

I also hold a cranial prosthesis specialist certification from Wig Medical, which is what allows me to provide medical wigs to people with medically diagnosed hair loss.

Alongside that, I'm a certified Nutrafol salon partner, I hold certifications from several leading hair extension companies, and I'm certified with Procell Therapies in advanced hair rejuvenation. Taken together, that gives me a view of hair health from the inside out rather than just the surface.

Healthy hair is beautiful hair, and I've spent thirty-one years proving it.

Starting with the cause, not the cover-up

Because I'm a trichologist first, I begin by understanding why you're losing hair and what you actually need — which may be a full cranial prosthesis, may be a topper, and may be care for the scalp underneath before anything else.

That matters.

A prosthesis fitted over an untreated scalp condition solves half a problem. I'd rather look at the whole picture and tell you honestly what I see.

From there I guide you through choosing and fitting something that looks natural and feels comfortable to wear.

Fitting, customizing and securing your unit

I'm also a hairstylist specializing in non-surgical hair replacement, so I fit, customize and style cranial prostheses myself.

A cranial prosthesis is a medical-grade unit designed for medical hair loss, and it's built differently from a retail wig. I'll walk you through how to secure yours — adhesive, tapes or a non-adhesive option, depending on what suits your scalp and your life — and how to care for both the unit and the skin underneath it.

The craft is a real part of why I love this: customizing the cut, the color and the fit so it looks like your hair and not like a wig.

What I enjoy most

The moment a client looks in the mirror and sees herself again.

After three decades in this industry, I've learned that hair loss touches far more than appearance. It touches confidence, identity, and how you show up in the world. Fitting a prosthesis is a chance to give some of that back, in a private setting where you're cared for and never rushed.

Many clients arrive anxious and leave standing taller. I don't get tired of that.

Help with the insurance side

I want to take the stress out of the paperwork, so I help clients navigate the documentation and reimbursement process.

Your physician — usually a dermatologist or an oncologist — writes the prescription, and one word on it carries a lot of weight: it should say cranial prosthesis rather than wig. The first is a medical device; the second reads as a cosmetic purchase. Here's how insurance coverage for a cranial prosthesis works if you'd like to understand it before we meet.

I won't promise you a reimbursement before your plan is checked, because nobody honestly can. Coverage depends on your plan, your state, your diagnosis, your documentation and your supplier status, and Original Medicare doesn't cover cranial prostheses at present. What I can tell you is that a good share of denials come down to how something was documented.

If you're still working out what's behind your hair loss, there's a plain-English guide to the types of medical hair loss here on the site.

Charlotte, and the people in it

What I love most about this community is the trust and the resilience.

Clients often arrive at Treatment Salon at one of the most vulnerable moments of their lives, and they let me be part of it. I'm inspired by their strength, and by how much they support each other — sharing what they've learned, encouraging the next person through it.

I also value working alongside physicians, oncology teams and fellow specialists who care about the whole person rather than just the diagnosis. After thirty-one years I'm still moved by how a community built on compassion can turn a hard season into one of confidence and connection, and I'm proud our Charlotte salon is a place where that happens.
